Senior dogs age much faster than we do and need special care and treatment. At Campbell River Veterinary Hospital, we recommend that our elderly dogs have a physical exam every six months to watch for any concerns that can creep up. Yearly blood work is also recommended, to ensure a healthy dog and monitor kidney and liver values.

When is a dog considered a senior pet?

Normally a pet becomes a senior at age seven, but that can vary depending on the breed of your dog. Large breed dogs such as Great Danes become senior pets earlier.

What are the most common health issues experienced by senior dogs?

There are many health concerns to watch for in older dogs. As they age quicker, some symptoms of the disease can come up quickly. Some health concerns to watch for are muscle wasting, cancer, joint concerns, and liver and kidney failure.

How should I care for my senior dog?

We recommend that you have an exam of your dog every six months and yearly blood work.
