Vaccinating kittens is important but does not need to be done until eight weeks of age. In the first few days after birth, the mother’s milk is rich in antibodies. This is called colostrum and protects the kitten until vaccines are given. We wait until eight weeks to vaccinate because this is when maternal antibodies start to wear off.

When should kittens get their first vaccination shots?

Your kitten should receive its first vaccines at eight weeks of age.

How often does my kitten need to be vaccinated?

Kittens should be vaccinated every four weeks until 16 weeks of age.

Does my kitten only need core vaccines?

If your kitten goes outside he/she will need core vaccines (FVRCP and Rabies) as well as a vaccine for feline leukemia virus, a deadly virus passed through blood or saliva of infected cats or to the fetus from the mother.
